CHAPTER 14

Night had fallen, bringing with it that crisp, Arcadian breeze I had felt so harshly in the brig. I wasn’t in the brig anymore, though. I was still in the captain’s quarters, sitting awkwardly on a chair covered in furs. This was the one part of our deal he’d had to modify.

I had asked about whether or not I was getting my own cabin, and he’d quickly pointed out that, one, this wasn’t a pleasure cruise, and two, not even the first mate got her own cabin. The only other choice available was for me to share a bunk or a hammock with one of his fine crewmembers down below, or stay in his room, in his presence, separated by that folding screen I’d changed behind earlier.

I wasn’t sure what was worse, spending a night with him, or spending it with his crew, but I hadn’t had much time to decide, so, here I was.

“Psst, Kara…” Bubbles dared to whisper.

The captain wasn’t in his cabin right now, so it was probably safe for her to speak, though he moved so quietly, I had no idea of his comings and goings. “Hey,” I whispered, keeping my voice as low as possible. “How are you doing back there?”

“Dry, thirsty, and hungry.”

I picked up my plate of food and held it up. There was still some fruit on it, some meat too. I had made sure to leave some for her. Bubbles usually ate as often as I did, but she didn’t need to eat much, and she wasn’t shy of eating my leftovers.

The only problem was, I didn’t have any water to give her. The fruits I’d eaten were enough to fix my thirst without the need for me to indulge in whatever Fae alcohol the pirates liked to swig from out of unmarked jars. But actual water for Bubbles to dip in? I had none of that.

“Try this,” I said, “The fruits are surprisingly good, and the meat kind of tastes like chicken.”

“Everything tastes like chicken,” Bubbles said as she zipped out of my hair and settled on the plate I was holding. She grabbed a piece of meat, tore it apart, and ate some. Her purple hair was a little disheveled, and her wings were drooping, but otherwise she looked like she was in good spirits.

“This is…” she paused, chewed, then nodded. “Sand Dragon.”

“Sand Dragon?”

“A kind of reptile.”

I felt my stomach gurgle. “I ate reptile?”

“You said it was tasty, don’t let it gross you out now.” Bubbles floated over to a piece of fruit and went at it, quickly tearing chunks of it with her teeth. Her eyes rolled into the back of her skull. “Oh my Gods, I missed food. Feels like I haven’t eaten in years.”

“Enjoy it,” I said, smiling. “I’m really hoping the fact that I’m sitting here, eating, means our luck has changed a little.”

“Try not to get too comfortable, though. If I were you, I would finish this plate once I’m done. The captain only wants you so long as you’re useful to him.
